Nolafunk Announces New Additions to its 6th Annual Series During Jazz Fest

Today at noon, Nolafunk announced three new additions to its annual concert series held in New Orleans throughout the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. Taking place in 2017 from April 28th – May 7th at the Fair Grounds Race Course in historic Mid-City, Jazz Fest has been held each Spring since 1970 to celebrate the indigenous music and culture of New Orleans & Louisiana. Pollstar Magazine has crowned Jazz Fest “Festival of the Year” four different times, with last year’s superstar lineup boasting legends like Stevie Wonder, Pearl Jam and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Jazz Fest attracts over 400,000 music enthusiasts to New Orleans each year, with an estimated 425,000 people in attendace at 2016’s festival and a record 650,000 people in 2001 for the celebration of Louis Armstrong’s centennial. While the main attraction at the Fair Grounds Race Course lays the foundation of the multi-weekend celebration of culture & music, Jazz Fest is arguably best known for the various shows and events that happen at unaffiliated venues throughout the city during the two week span.

Jazz Fest New Orleans CEG

For its 6th year, Nolafunk – a CEG-operated promoter that honors the spirit of New Orleans in New York City year round – has organized a series of concerts at different venues in New Orleans throughout Jazz Fest. With the main festival ending at 7 PM each day and over 400,000 people expected to attend this year, the demand for quality music each night needs to be met, and Nolafunk has devised a series of shows to help supply that demand.

Today’s wave of announcements includes Los Angeles blues-rock trio The Record Company, the return of Voodoo Dead (below) for two nights, and soul-singer Morgan James.  As always, the Nolafunk Series will feature a diverse collection of musicians from inside and out of the New Orleans cultural sphere, with special performances combining older and younger musicians, as well as national acts and local legends.

Voodoo Dead

The Record Company will join North Mississippi Allstars & Anders Osborne present N.M.O. (North Mississippi Osborne), a band formed in 2015 that blends the Dickinson Brothers’ blues-infused rock and roll with Anders Osborne’s unique brand of New Orleans soul. For its third year in a row, Voodoo Dead, which features Steve Kimock (The Other Ones), Jackie Greene (Phil & Friends, The Black Crowes), George Porter Jr. (The Meters), Jeff Chimenti (of Dead & Co.), and JM Kimock (Mike Gordon Band), will return for the second weekend of Jazz Fest to perform two nights at Republic NOLA.  Morgan James, referred to by the New York Times as “a phenomenal talent whose feel for classic soul is bone deep,” will perform at Le Petit Theatre on Sunday, April 30th.

As previously announced, the series will also feature the return of Dead Feat for two nights, a band that performs the music of the Grateful Dead, Little Feat, Anders Osborne, and other unique covers, comprised of Anders Osborne (below), Jackie Greene, Paul Barrere & Fred Tackett of Little Feat, and Brady Blade. Midnight North featuring Grahame Lesh will open one night, and new Leftover Salmon side-project Sockeye will open the other night.
